To be a successful antiques collector you will have to educate yourself on the exact value of antiques in your specialist area of antiques interest. The one question I get most often is: "How do you determine the value of certain antiques”. When looking for the value of antiques, it is always a good idea to get a second opinion. Recognizing the value of antiques takes a lifetime of learning, and many appraisers have certifications from associations such as the International Society of Appraisers. However being certified does not necessarily make someone an expert. Appraisers can often estimate the value of antiques because they are very educated and up to date on what most buyers are willing to pay for certain items, and they may even know why. Appraisers who stay current with bids and prices at recent auctions therefore are more familiar with what buyers are right now willing to pay and so they can offer that value of antiques that are brought before them. One of the reasons that the value of antiques has such a wide range is because it’s really up to the buyer to set the price of them; this is unlike buying new items at a store where the manufacturer or retailer sets the price and the buyer can choose to pay it and buy the item. The true value of antiques is not always tied to beauty but to desirability. Some antique-market sources have said the value of antiques had never declined, no matter how bad the economy was although these things do directly affect the value of antiques and collectibles. The value of antiques and collectibles often rises faster than the retail price index. The substantial increase in value of antiques over the years cannot be explained by inflation. Instead the value of antiques varies enormously and is strongly influenced by taste, scarcity and availability.
